GEORGE TOWN (Feb 6, 2013): The Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) has engaged Public Works Institute of Malaysia (Ikram) to look into two hill slope projects along Lorong Kenari and Pintasan Kenari in Sungai Ara, which have residents in the area fearing for their safety.

MPPP secretary Ang Aing Thye said state Local Government Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow has chaired two meetings with the developer, Palmex Industries Sdn Bhd, on its two projects – 107 units of three-storey houses in Pintasan Kenari and another 51 units of terrace houses in Lorong Kenari 9.

“For the first project, the developer has been advised to redesign the 9m tier retention wall to a two-tier retention wall, which is about 4.5 metres,” Ang said, adding that this was the recommendation from Ikram.

He said the developer has submitted the proposal to redesign the retention wall and it will be discussed soon at a one stop centre meeting.

Ang added that Ikram is in the midst of looking into the other project and a report of it will be submitted to the council by end of this month.

Ang told reporters this at a press conference held by Chow in Komtar today. Also present were Batu Maung assemblyman Datuk Abdul Malik Kassim and MPPP president Datuk Patahiyah Ismail.

The projects came under fire from residents living in Sungai Ara, who fear that the construction of these projects could affect the environment and safety of residents living nearby.

Meanwhile, Chow said the developer will ensure that the earthworks for the projects are revised and the consultant’s suggestions taken seriously.
