GENTING HIGHLANDS, 25 June 2026 – Dato’ Ir. Ts. Hj. Mohd Taufik Bin Haron, Chief Executive Officer of IKRAM Works Sdn. Bhd. (IKRAM), was invited as a keynote speaker and panelist at the Simposium Pengurusan Strata 2026, organised by Majlis Perbandaran Hulu Selangor (MPHS) at GEO Resort & Hotel, Genting Highlands.
The symposium was officially officiated by Y.B. Datuk Borhan Bin Aman Shah, EXCO Perumahan dan Kebudayaan Selangor, and brought together representatives from local authorities, government agencies, industry practitioners, consultants, developers, academia, and strata management professionals to discuss current challenges and future strategies in managing developments within highland and strata environments.
During his presentation entitled “When Slopes Become a Crisis: Who is Truly Responsible?”, Dato’ Taufik highlighted the growing challenges of urban expansion into hilly terrains driven by the increasing population of Malaysia, particularly in Selangor and the Klang Valley. He emphasised that rapid development in highland areas demands not only sound engineering practices but also effective governance, collaboration, and accountability among all stakeholders.
The presentation provided a comprehensive overview of the various stakeholders involved throughout the lifecycle of hilly developments, outlining their respective roles and shared responsibilities in ensuring public safety. To illustrate the potential consequences of inadequate planning and risk management, several real-world case studies and videos of catastrophic slope failures from around the world were presented, reinforcing the importance of adopting a preventive rather than reactive approach.
Dato’ Taufik also guided participants through the extensive regulatory framework and technical guidelines governing hillside development in Malaysia. He stressed that rigorous geotechnical investigations and comprehensive technical reporting are fundamental to understanding ground conditions, supporting informed engineering decisions, and serving as credible technical evidence throughout the project lifecycle.
A key highlight of the presentation was the integration of Building Information Modelling (BIM) into hilly development projects. He demonstrated how BIM can support better planning, design coordination, asset management, maintenance planning, and long-term monitoring, ultimately enabling more efficient, sustainable, and resilient infrastructure development.
Beyond the technical aspects, Dato’ Taufik linked engineering practices with the principles of Maqasid Syariah, emphasising that sustainable development must be underpinned by integrity, ethical decision-making, transparency, and accountability. Referring to the five pillars of Maqasid Syariah, he highlighted that engineering excellence alone is insufficient without strong moral responsibility in safeguarding lives, property, the environment, and public trust.
Following the presentation, Dato’ Taufik joined fellow invited experts in a forum titled “Advancing Strata Management Practices”, where they exchanged perspectives on the future of strata management, sustainable development, regulatory challenges, and collaborative approaches to enhancing the safety and resilience of stratified properties. The forum was chaired by TPr. Gs. Azlina from the Commissioner of Buildings (COB), Majlis Perbandaran Hulu Selangor (MPHS), and featured an engaging discussion with active participation from the audience.
Concluding both the presentation and forum session, Dato’ Taufik reminded participants that slope safety is a collective responsibility. He called upon regulators, developers, consultants, contractors, local authorities, property managers, and the wider community to strengthen collaboration and foster a culture of prevention, where every stakeholder plays an active role in managing risks before disasters occur.
The symposium concluded with lively interactions between speakers and participants, reflecting the growing interest in integrating engineering innovation, digital transformation, sound governance, and ethical values into the future of hilly development and strata management.
IKRAM remains committed to advancing engineering excellence and supporting safer, smarter, and more sustainable infrastructure development through technical innovation, knowledge sharing, and professional collaboration.
